PhD Position (m/f/d) at the Technical University of Munich - Geodetic Observatory Wettzell

30.06.2026, Wissenschaftliches Personal

Project Description

At the Technical University of Munich, within the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, we operate the 4 × 4 m G ring laser — currently the only instrument of its kind providing data suitable for geodetic applications.

This PhD project focuses on the operation and further development of an optical frequency comb, as well as on the implementation of electronics for optical readout systems. The work includes system operation, continued development, and performance optimization.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the quantum metrology group at the University of Bonn and the geodetic analysis team, contributing to data generation, processing, and delivery. The project will address key challenges such as advanced backscatter mitigation, improved scale factor estimation, and advanced post-processing. A background in physics or engineering, ideally with some experience in laser optics, digital signal processing, and electronics, is an advantage. More about the Ring project can be found: www.ringlaser.de

Requirements

Ÿ  Master’s degree in physics, laser physics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field

Ÿ  Programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python (knowledge of C++ is an advantage)

Ÿ  Solid background in optics and laser physics

Ÿ  Knowledge of digital signal processing

Ÿ  Interest in building and operating complex experimental systems and prototypes

Ÿ  Experience with electronics, including PCB design, soldering, and characterization of electronic components, is an advantage

Ÿ  Experience with frequency combs or precision metrology is a plus

Ÿ  Ability to work independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary team

Ÿ  Strong problem-solving skills and a structured working style

Ÿ  Good command of written and spoken English, knowledge of German is advantageous but not required.

Responsibilities

Ÿ  Operation, maintenance, and further development of the G ring laser system

Ÿ  Operation and improvement of an optical frequency comb for precision metrology applications

Ÿ  Design and implementation of electronic systems for optical readout

Ÿ  Optimization of system performance, including stability and sensitivity improvements

Ÿ  Investigation and mitigation of systematic effects, particularly backscatter

Ÿ  Development and implementation of advanced data processing and analysis methods

Ÿ  Contribution to scale factor determination and calibration strategies

Ÿ  Collaboration with project partners at the University of Bonn and within the geodetic analysis team

Ÿ  Documentation of results, preparation of scientific publications, and presentation at conferences

We offer

Ÿ  Work with high-end instrumentation, including the G ring laser and optical frequency comb systems

Ÿ  A research position designed to support doctoral studies and foster scientific and personal development

Ÿ  Working in an international and interdisciplinary research unit involving multiple institutions and 14 doctoral researchers

Ÿ  Flexible working hours and the possibility of working partially from home

Ÿ  We offer a 75% position classified according to TVL E13, initially limited to four years, within the DFG-funded project described above

Ÿ  The primary workplace will be the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, with regular interaction with TUM and project partners

Ÿ  A continuation into a post-doctoral position may be possible

The position is generally suitable for candidates with disabilities. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude, and professional performance.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunities. We strongly encourage applications from women and from individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, as they enrich our research and working environment.
